Ascendo Resources is currently seeking a Chief Financial Officer for one of our clients located in Brooklyn, New York.
Our client is an established non-profit specializing in healthcare and social services serving vulnerable and underserved communities.
Salary range is from $150,000 to $160,000 and is fully on-site.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the CEO and serving on the executive leadership team, the CFO will oversee all core finance and administrative functions, including:
Finance & Accounting
- Own all day-to-day accounting operations: general ledger, AP, AR, payroll, cash management, bank recs, close, and audit prep
- Lead cash flow planning and ensure funds are available to meet operating needs
- Oversee investment, asset, and banking relationships
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with nonprofit and healthcare funding requirements
- Lead annual audits and tax filings; act as primary liaison to external auditors
- Build forward-looking models, dashboards, and reporting tools to advise executive leadership and the Board
Revenue Cycle & Billing
- Oversee end-to-end revenue cycle across Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial payers
- Ensure accurate coding, billing, claims processing, reimbursement, and denial management
- Track payer trends and create KPIs to maximize collections and reduce denials
- Ensure adherence to HIPAA and other healthcare billing standards
Budgeting & Planning
- Lead annual budgeting and forecasting in partnership with program leadership
- Analyze budget vs. actuals; provide recommendations to drive performance and sustainability
- Develop short- and long-term financial strategies aligned to mission and funding realities
- Ensure fiscal systems align with grant/contract terms and allowable spending
Operations & Administration
- Oversee core administrative functions including purchasing, facilities, vehicles, and insurance
- Partner with HR on workforce planning, staffing costs, and benefits strategy
- Integrate financial and operational systems for better visibility, efficiency, and compliance
Board & Governance
- Serve as primary financial voice to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Audit/Risk Committees
- Present financials, scenario modeling, and risk assessments to inform strategic decisions
- Support long-term planning, policy development, and organizational sustainability
Compliance, Risk & Quality
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit reporting standards and healthcare regulations (including Medicaid/Medicare, DOHMH, OMH, OASAS, HRSA)
- Protect organizational risk profile through proper insurance coverage and financial controls
- Promote trauma-informed, accountable, transparent financial practices
- Contribute to organization-wide quality improvement efforts by making financial data accessible, meaningful, and actionable
Who You Are
- A hands-on, detail-oriented finance leader who can operate at both strategic and tactical levels in a mission-centered environment
- Calm under pressure, diplomatic, and able to build trust with program leaders, clinicians, funders, auditors, the CEO, and the Board
- Strong communicator who can explain financial concepts clearly to non-finance stakeholders
- Decisive, proactive, and solutions-focused with a bias for execution and continuous improvement
- Comfortable leading in a complex, highly regulated environment with multiple funding streams and multiple reporting obligations
Must-Have Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (MBA and/or CPA strongly preferred)
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership, including ownership of accounting/finance operations
- Experience in a complex nonprofit environment, ideally with healthcare, behavioral health, or human services funding
- Deep understanding of government funding and reimbursement, including Medicaid/Medicare, city/state/federal grants, and private foundation grants
- Experience managing audits, Board reporting, budgets, and cash flow for a multi-program organization
- Strong Excel and financial systems skills; familiarity with nonprofit accounting software (FundEZ or similar)
- Proven leadership experience managing and developing finance teams
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
