Medical Billing Assistant | New York, NY (Harlem) | Temp-to-Perm | Pay: $27–$32/hr | Salary upon conversion: $50,000–$60,000

About the role This is a billing support role embedded within a small, mission-driven finance team, reporting directly to the CFO. The focus is on keeping Medicaid and insurance claims moving accurately, submitting on time, resolving denials, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks.

What you'll actually do

  • Submit Medicaid and commercial insurance claims weekly and resubmit any denied or rejected claims
  • Track billing issues and report on what's billed, pending, denied, and why
  • Verify insurance coverage for new patients and confirm service authorizations before billing
  • Post payments and assist with payment tracking
  • Help prepare weekly and monthly billing and revenue reports
  • Handle patient billing statements including co-pays and self-pay balances
  • Keep patient and insurance information current in the billing system
  • Support the broader billing team with general tasks and coverage as needed

What we're looking for

  • 2+ years of medical billing experience 
  • Solid knowledge of CPT, ICD-10 codes and claim forms (HCFA 1500, UB-04)
  • Experience with Medicaid and commercial insurance (mental health experience a strong plus)
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail
  • Must be comfortable working fully onsite

Environment A Harlem-based nonprofit that's been serving low-income children and families for over 80 years, offering behavioral health, mental health, and early childhood education services across New York City.

Additional details

  • Schedule: Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm (35-hour work week)
  • Software: Sage Intacct
  • Temp-to-perm: fully onsite during temp period, 1 WFH day upon conversion
  • Interview process: Virtual with HR and hiring manager then In-person with CFO
