Position Summary: The Medical Director of PM&R leads the clinical, operational, and administrative functions of a physical medicine and rehabilitation program. This physician ensures high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, and interdisciplinary collaboration to promote recovery and function in patients with physical impairments or disabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership

Provide direct patient care as a board-certified physiatrist

Oversee and guide the clinical management of all patients within the rehab unit

Evaluate and approve patient admissions and discharges for medical appropriateness

Collaborate with therapy teams (PT, OT, SLP) to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care

Monitor outcomes to optimize functional gains and patient satisfaction
Administrative Oversight

Develop and enforce clinical protocols, quality standards, and documentation procedures

Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., CMS, CARF, Joint Commission)

Serve as a liaison between hospital administration and the rehab unit

Lead regular interdisciplinary team meetings and medical staff conferences

Support strategic planning, budgeting, and program development
Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Build strong relationships with nursing, therapy, and case management teams

Foster a team-based culture focused on patient-centered care and functional recovery

Address and resolve any interdisciplinary care coordination issues
Quality & Compliance

Monitor clinical performance metrics, patient outcomes, and rehabilitation benchmarks

Lead quality improvement initiatives and corrective action plans

Participate in accreditation reviews and internal audits

Promote compliance with HIPAA and risk management procedures
Education & Training

Educate and mentor medical staff, residents, and allied health professionals

Promote continuing education and best practices in rehabilitation medicine

Serve as a clinical resource for advanced PM&R interventions and technologies
Required Qualifications
-
MD or DO with board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)

Active, unrestricted state medical license
-
5+ years of experience in rehabilitation medicine, including leadership roles preferred

Strong understanding of inpatient rehab operations, IRF criteria, and CMS regulations

Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
