Ascendo Resources is currently seeking an Accounting Manager for a full-time hybrid role.

 

Our client is a growing Brooklyn-based non-profit. We are seeking an Accounting Manager to oversee financial operations across multiple school sites. This position plays a vital role in ensuring accurate accounting, payroll administration, and compliance, while supervising accounts payable and purchasing functions. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role requires a strong mix of technical accounting expertise, payroll management experience, and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage general accounting functions including general ledger, reconciliations, and month-end close.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate financial records, including Board and agency reporting.
  • Supervise two staff members handling accounts payable and purchasing.
  • Oversee annual external audit and ensure compliance with GAAP and internal controls.
  • Collaborate with leadership on budgeting, variance analysis, and grants management.
  • Process and administer payroll for 200+ employees, ensuring accuracy of taxes, benefits, and deductions.
  • Partner with HR on employee changes, onboarding, and payroll-related training.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting and payroll systems and processes.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of nonprofit accounting experience required.
  • Strong GAAP knowledge and experience with month-end close and audits.
  • Payroll administration experience (multi-site or multi-entity preferred).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (financial models, projections, scenario planning).
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a small, fast-paced environment.

 

Preferred

  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge and Paychex Flex.
