About the Role
We are seeking a highly detail-oriented and knowledgeable Sales and Use Tax Accountant to join our finance team. This position is responsible for managing multi-state sales and use tax compliance, ensuring accurate and timely filings, and supporting audits and cross-functional tax initiatives.
The ideal candidate will bring strong tax technical expertise, analytical skills, and a proactive approach to maintaining compliance and improving processes.
🛠 Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions
- Ensure timely remittance of tax liabilities and monitor deadlines to avoid penalties or interest
- Reconcile sales and use tax accounts and prepare adjusting journal entries as needed
- Respond to state and local tax notices, including audit support and documentation
- Maintain and update exemption certificates and resale documentation
- Collaborate with Accounts Payable, Procurement, and AR teams to apply tax rules correctly
- Assist with ERP system and tax engine updates (e.g., Vertex, Avalara) to ensure proper tax mapping
- Stay current with tax law changes and implement necessary updates to compliance processes
- Identify process improvements and automation opportunities within the tax compliance function
✅ Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMI a plus)
- 2+ years of experience in sales and use tax or indirect tax compliance
- Strong understanding of multi-state tax regulations and nexus rules
- Experience with tax software such as Vertex, Avalara, or OneSource
- Proficiency in Excel and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or similar)
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work independently
⭐ Preferred Skills
- Experience in manufacturing, e-commerce, or other complex tax environments
- Familiarity with taxability matrices, product/service classification, and customer tax profiles
- Hands-on experience with Vertex O Series or similar tax engines
