Manufacturing Engineer I/II

About the Opportunity:
A manufacturing organization in Memphis, TN is hiring Manufacturing Engineers at the I and II levels to support onsite mechanical manufacturing operations for large, complex assembly builds. This is a contract opportunity focused on mechanical assembly process improvement, production readiness, manufacturing documentation, and hands-on troubleshooting across NPI, production ramp, and sustaining operations. Level will be determined based on depth of experience, technical scope, and manufacturing engineering background.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop, review, and maintain mechanical manufacturing documentation, including work instructions, SOPs, assembly drawings, exploded views, torque specifications, BOMs, and process flow documentation.
  • Translate mechanical drawings and assembly prints into clear, production-ready instructions for operators and technicians.
  • Review mechanical designs and drawings for manufacturability, accessibility, tooling needs, material handling constraints, and production readiness.
  • Support mechanical subassembly layout and installation, including frames, enclosures, heat exchangers, piping, hoses, brackets, structural components, pressure interfaces, and related mechanical integration.
  • Define and standardize assembly methods for fastening, torque control, gasket and seal interfaces, alignment, hose and piping routing, structural supports, and workmanship standards.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical build issues related to fit-up, tolerance stack-ups, interference, leakage points, structural stress, vibration, pressure interfaces, rework, and assembly execution.
  • Support DFM/DFA reviews, mechanical risk mitigation, process validation, build sequence optimization, and production readiness activities.
  • Partner with manufacturing, industrial, electrical, controls, test, operations, technicians, and production teams to improve assembly flow, safety, quality, labor efficiency, cost, and standardization.
  • Support NPI launches, production ramps, sustaining production, commissioning, FAT/SAT, and system acceptance readiness.
  • Lead or support continuous improvement efforts focused on reliability, defect reduction, process standardization, ergonomics, labor efficiency, and manufacturing readiness.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical manufacturing, industrial equipment assembly, or a related engineering role.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience aligns with Manufacturing Engineer I level consideration.
  • 7+ years of progressive mechanical manufacturing engineering experience aligns with Manufacturing Engineer II level consideration.
  • Experience reading, reviewing, and interpreting mechanical drawings, GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and complex assembly prints.
  • Hands-on experience supporting mechanical assembly processes, including structural builds, piping or hose installation/routing, fastener applications, torque control, gasket/sealing systems, pressure interfaces, or related mechanical integration.
  • Experience creating or maintaining manufacturing documentation such as SOPs, standard work, work instructions, visual aids, assembly documentation, or process flow documentation.
  • Ability to work onsite in Memphis, TN for the duration of the contract.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with large-form mechanical assembly, industrial equipment, fabricated structures, heavy equipment, capital equipment, automation systems, aerospace structures, automotive assemblies, HVAC/mechanical systems, complex electromechanical systems, or regulated manufacturing environments.
  • CAD experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Creo, or a comparable platform.
  • Experience with DFM/DFA, PFMEA, manufacturability reviews, build sequence optimization, mechanical risk assessments, process validation, or production readiness support.
  • Familiarity with torque tools, fixturing, lifting devices, mechanical assembly aids, ergonomic improvements, and safe mechanical build practices.
  • Experience supporting NPI, production ramp-up, sustaining production, ECNs, commissioning, FAT/SAT, or mechanical system acceptance activities.
  • Knowledge of fastener selection, torque strategies, gasket and seal interfaces, hose and piping routing, leak paths, pressure interfaces, and mechanical failure modes.
  • Experience supporting kitting strategies, material readiness, BOM accuracy, mechanical kitting, fixturing, line-side readiness, or assembly readiness.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing, root cause analysis, 8D, DMAIC, A3, takt time, station balance, or labor efficiency improvements.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, ISO, ASME, torque safety, pressure safety, or related mechanical and safety standards.
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Compensation and Work Model:

  • Pay range: $27 to $52/hr, depending on experience and level.
