Heavy Haul Field Project Manager

Location: Jacksonville, FL
Employment Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Primarily Monday–Friday; flexibility required for extended hours, after-hours, weekends, and project-specific coverage

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Heavy Haul Field Project Manager to provide hands-on oversight of complex heavy haul and specialized transportation projects.

This role will manage projects both in the field and from the office, ensuring shipments remain on schedule, operational risks are addressed quickly, and customers receive consistent communication throughout execution.

The ideal candidate will have direct experience with heavy haul, over-dimensional freight, drivers, routing, permitting, and transportation operations. This is not a traditional office-only project management position; the Field Project Manager will be actively involved in site visits, route surveys, project execution, and real-time problem solving.

Key Responsibilities

Heavy Haul Project Management

• Manage assigned heavy haul projects from planning through completion.

• Oversee project scope, schedules, operational requirements, and budgets.

• Monitor active projects in real time and address delays, disruptions, and operational challenges.

• Coordinate closely with Heavy Haul Operations and supporting departments to ensure successful execution.

• Provide extended project coverage when necessary, including evenings, weekends, or adjusted schedules.

Field & Route Oversight

• Conduct and assist with site visits and route surveys for oversized and over-dimensional shipments.

• Evaluate routes, site conditions, access points, restrictions, and potential operational challenges.

• Assist with developing routing strategies for specialized and heavy haul loads.

• Document route survey findings, site conditions, and project requirements.

• Serve as a primary field contact for drivers, customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure projects comply with applicable DOT/FMCSA regulations, permitting requirements, safety procedures, and company SOPs.

• Promote a strong safety culture across all project activities.

• Identify potential safety or operational risks before they impact execution.

• Assist in implementing corrective actions when compliance or safety issues arise.

Driver, Carrier & Vendor Coordination

• Work directly with drivers and carriers throughout project execution.

• Assist with monitoring carrier and driver scorecards, KPIs, service levels, and performance.

• Communicate expectations clearly and resolve field-related issues quickly.

• Ensure carriers and drivers meet project, safety, compliance, and customer requirements.

Customer & Stakeholder Communication

• Serve as a key liaison between customers, leadership, operations, drivers, and supporting teams.

• Provide customers with timely updates regarding project progress, changes, and issues.

• Participate in project meetings, customer discussions, and post-project reviews.

• Deliver project status reports and performance summaries to leadership and stakeholders.

Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain accurate daily field reports and job activity logs.

• Provide daily project updates as required.

• Complete incident reports, delivery documentation, site visit reports, and route survey reports.

• Ensure project documentation is accurate, professional, and submitted within required timeframes.

• Assist with monitoring project costs, accessorial charges, and other operational expenses.

Required Qualifications

• Heavy haul and/or over-dimensional transportation experience required.

• Minimum 5 years of dispatch or transportation operations experience.

• Direct experience working with commercial drivers required.

• Working knowledge of transporting oversized and over-dimensional shipments.

• Experience with the permitting process for over-dimensional freight.

• Strong understanding of DOT regulations, routing requirements, transportation compliance, and industry best practices.

• Experience managing complex transportation or logistics projects.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

• Ability to remain calm and make decisions in high-pressure operational environments.

• Excellent communication, customer service, and conflict-resolution skills.

• Strong attendance, reliability, and professional work habits.

• Ability and willingness to work with evolving technology and transportation systems.

• Fluent in English.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field.

• Equivalent combination of education and relevant transportation experience will be considered.

• PMP, Six Sigma, or similar project/process improvement certification.

• Previous CDL-A driving experience.

• Experience with AS400, Monday.com, TMS platforms, or similar logistics technology.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate combines heavy haul transportation knowledge with hands-on project leadership. They understand what it takes to move oversized freight safely and successfully, including routing, permitting, driver coordination, site conditions, customer communication, and real-time operational troubleshooting.

This position is best suited for someone who is comfortable being in the field, working directly with drivers and customers, and taking ownership of projects from planning through final delivery.
