Ascendo Resources is currently seeking a Director of Accounting for a full-time, hybrid role located in the Bronx, NY.

 

Our client is a mission-driven healthcare organization based in the Bronx that provides managed care and health insurance services to underserved communities.

 

We’re seeking an Accounting Director to lead the organization’s full-cycle accounting operations and serve as a key strategic partner to the CFO and executive leadership.

 

About the Role

The Accounting Director will oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting function and ensure timely, accurate financial reporting in a highly regulated healthcare environment. This leader will manage the month-end close, coordinate government grants and programs’ financial reporting (including cost reports such as MMCOR), and guide the team through external audits and Single Audits.

You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional partners in Human Resources, Claims, IT, Actuarial, and Operations to ensure data integrity, strong internal controls, and informed decision-making at the leadership level.

 

Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Reporting

  • Lead full-cycle accounting operations and month-end close
  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Maintain the general ledger, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
  • Provide timely financial reports and analysis to executive leadership

Government Grants & Program Reporting

  • Oversee financial reporting for government grants and healthcare programs
  • Manage preparation and submission of regulatory cost reports (e.g., MMCOR)
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local requirements

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop an accounting team in a fast-paced environment
  • Set performance expectations and foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement
  • Support professional development and cross-training within the department

Systems, Processes & Data Integrity

  • Strengthen and streamline accounting processes and internal controls
  • Ensure data integrity across financial systems and files
  • Partner with IT and other departments to optimize system workflows

Compliance & Audits

  • Lead preparation for external audits and Single Audits
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory and compliance standards
  • Implement and refine policies and procedures to support strong governance

Strategic Support

  • Provide financial insights and analysis to support strategic initiatives
  • Assist leadership with forecasting, budgeting, and scenario analysis
  • Serve as a key thought partner to the CFO on financial operations and risk mitigation

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • CPA preferred (or equivalent experience)
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory leadership
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
  • Experience in healthcare finance, particularly managed care and health insurance
  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting/ERP systems
  • Exceptional attention to detail, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to communicate clearly with both financial and non-financial stakeholders
  • Proven track record as a proactive problem-solver with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines
  • High integrity and commitment to accuracy, quality, and accountability
