Position Summary: The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization, ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. This role maintains financial records in accordance with GAAP and fund accounting principles while supporting audits, grant reporting, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities:

Prepare and post journal entries, maintain general ledger accounts, and assist with month-end and year-end close processes

Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts monthly

Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable functions

Assist with tracking and reporting restricted and unrestricted funds in accordance with fund accounting standards

Support grant accounting, including tracking expenditures and preparing financial reports for funders

Prepare and maintain schedules for annual audits and assist external auditors as needed

Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and nonprofit reporting requirements (including Form 990 support)

Maintain internal controls and assist with process improvements

Prepare financial reports for leadership, program managers, and the Board of Directors

Assist with budget preparation and variance analysis

Support payroll processing and related reconciliations (if applicable)
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

2–4+ years of accounting experience (nonprofit experience preferred)

Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit/fund accounting principles

Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, or similar)

Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, reconciliations)

High attention to detail and strong organizational skills

Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a mission-driven environment
