Job Description
The Medical Biller is responsible for accurately preparing and submitting medical claims to insurance companies and government agencies for reimbursement. This role involves reviewing patient information, verifying insurance coverage, coding diagnoses and procedures according to established guidelines, and following up on unpaid or denied claims. The Medical Biller ensures compliance with healthcare regulations and billing standards to optimize revenue cycle management within the healthcare facility.
Job Duties
- Review and verify patient information, insurance details, and treatment documentation for billing accuracy.
- Assign appropriate medical codes to diagnoses and procedures using current coding standards.
- Prepare and submit clean and accurate claims to insurance carriers and government payers in a timely manner.
- Monitor and track claim status, identifying and resolving rejected or denied claims promptly.
- Communicate with insurance companies, healthcare providers, and patients to resolve billing issues and clarify coverage details.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and financial information according to HIPAA regulations.
- Update and maintain billing records, reports, and documentation to ensure compliance and audit readiness.
- Collaborate with healthcare staff to clarify documentation and coding questions to ensure accurate billing.
- Stay current with changes in billing regulations, coding guidelines, and payer policies.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proven experience in medical billing or related healthcare billing functions.
- Strong understanding of ICD-10, CPT-4, HCPCS, and modifiers.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare coding systems.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and claim preparation.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with insurance companies and healthcare providers.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Word.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Completion of a medical billing or coding course is preferred but not mandatory.
Experience
- At least one year of experience in medical billing or healthcare revenue cycle management is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of medical billing processes and healthcare reimbursement systems.
- Understanding of insurance policies, payer requirements, and claim adjudication processes.
- Familiarity with billing compliance standards, including HIPAA regulations.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Analytical skills to identify and resolve billing discrepancies and denials.
- Customer service orientation to address patient billing inquiries professionally.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in medical billing or coding such as Certified Professional Biller (CPB) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
- Experience working with major insurance carriers and government programs like Medicare and Medicaid.
- Experience in a healthcare facility or medical practice setting.
Working Conditions
