Accountant – Job Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, performing account reconciliations, and ensuring compliance with applicable state and local tax regulations. This role supports the month-end close process, prepares and files sales and use tax returns, manages personal property tax filings, and assists with general accounting functions to ensure financial accuracy and integrity.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

General Accounting

  • Prepare and complete monthly balance sheet account reconciliations
  • Investigate and resolve account variances in a timely manner
  • Maintain organized documentation to support all reconciliations
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes
  • Prepare journal entries with proper supporting documentation
  • Assist in preparing audit schedules for external auditors
  • Research tax regulations and respond to internal accounting/tax inquiries
  • Maintain compliance calendars to ensure deadlines are met and penalties are avoided

Sales & Use Tax

  • Prepare, review, and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales & use tax returns
  • Monitor changes in state and local tax regulations to ensure compliance
  • Reconcile sales tax accounts and resolve issues with tax agencies
  • Maintain exemption certificates and audit-ready documentation

Personal Property Tax

  • Collect and maintain asset data for personal property tax filings
  • Prepare and submit annual personal property tax returns
  • Reconcile tax assessments and payments to the general ledger

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • 3–4 years of accounting and tax experience
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and general ledger accounting
  • Experience with sales & use tax compliance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems
  • Experience with construction accounting ERP systems preferred
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work independently
