Job Summary

The client we are working with is seeking a detail-oriented Sales and Use Tax Accountant to manage multi-state sales and use tax compliance for our organization. This role is essential for ensuring accurate filings, minimizing audit risk, and maintaining adherence to evolving state and local tax regulations. The ideal candidate will bring strong analytical skills, tax expertise, and the ability to collaborate across multiple teams to support both strategic and operational tax functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and file accurate sales and use tax returns for multiple states and local jurisdictions on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Ensure timely remittance of tax payments to avoid penalties and interest.
  • Reconcile sales and use tax accounts and prepare necessary adjusting journal entries (AJEs).
  • Maintain organized and complete documentation for all filings, positions, and notices.
  • Research and interpret state and local tax laws, staying current on legislative changes.
  • Respond to tax notices and inquiries from state and local tax authorities.
  • Assist with tax audits, including documentation preparation and auditor communications.
  • Collaborate with Accounts Payable and Procurement teams to maintain use tax guidelines and accruals.
  • Partner with Accounts Receivable to issue tax credits and manage exemption requests.
  • Maintain and update tax exemption certificates and resale documentation, ensuring proper storage in tax software.
  • Support ERP system updates and tax engine integrations (e.g., Avalara, Vertex) to ensure accurate tax calculation.
  • Analyze reports and workpapers to identify patterns, errors, and inconsistencies; propose corrective actions.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities to enhance compliance efficiency.
  • Communicate effectively across departments to resolve tax and compliance issues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMI is a plus).
  • 2+ years of experience in sales and use tax accounting or indirect tax compliance.
  • Strong understanding of multi-state tax regulations, nexus rules, and filing requirements.
  • Proficiency in Excel and tax software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, OneSource).
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple deadlines, and prioritize tasks effectively.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with ERP systems such as SAP or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with e-commerce or manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of taxability matrices and product/service classification.
  • Experience maintaining customer tax profiles and tax engine configurations.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $64,500 – $86,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
  • This is a salaried position; overtime is not eligible.
  • May be eligible for a sign-on bonus or relocation assistance.
